North Medford High wrestling coach Phillip Lopez isn't the type to get carried away.
Top-seeded North Medford tallied 18 hits en route to a 17-2 win over David Douglas in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs Monday at North Medford High.
The Black Tornado (22-6), ranked first in the final Oregon School Activities Association power rankings and second in the coaches poll, will next host Southridge in a second-round contest Wednesday. The Skyhawks (16-12) beat Reynolds, 3-0, on Monday.
"I was just pleased because our kids came out prepared," North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe said. "They actually played to the level that they are capable of playing. When you are the No. 1 team, that puts a stigma on you that everyone has expectations. Sometimes those expectations are hard to meet."
Sophomore Jared Evans had a day to remember, going 4-for-5 with six RBIs and coming a home run short of hitting for the cycle. He pounded a pivotal three-run triple with one out and his team ahead 4-2 in the fourth inning.
"That was a huge at-bat for us," said Wolfe of Evans, who also scored a run and stole a base. "Had he popped the ball up, the momentum would have swung. They had put the last run on the board."
Evans added a two-run triple in the fifth, when North erupted for seven runs.
Micah Brown went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Christian Gillis 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Hayden Evans 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Taylor Raff 2-for-5 with three runs. Austin Zavala finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two runs.
Colton Westfall earned the win after striking out 10 and allowing two runs (one earned), five hits and one walk in six innings.
David Douglas (4-23) — ranked last in the final OSAA power rankings — was coming off a 3-2 upset of South Medford in a 6A play-in game at Harry & David Field on May 14.
