The top-seeded North Medford softball team cruised past Southridge, 7-0, in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs at North Medford High on Wednesday.
The victory sets up a 4:30 p.m. home quarterfinal date on Friday with Central Catholic (21-7), which beat West Salem, 2-0. The Rams, who finished third in the Mt. Hood Conference but are ranked eighth in the power rankings, beat North Medford 4-1 in eight innings in the 2010 quarterfinals.
Neither team has given up a run in the postseason.
The Black Tornado (26-2) had little trouble against the Skyhawks.
Senior pitcher Maryssa Becker, who improved to 16-1, pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks. She didn't allow a runner to advance beyond first base until the seventh inning with two outs.
"Maryssa has had great control the last two weeks," North Medford head coach Mike Mayben said. "(On Wednesday) nothing was hit really hard until the seventh."
North led 7-0 after four innings against Southridge (15-13).
Michelle Draper's RBI groundout scored Katie Williamson and made it 1-0 in the second inning. In the third, Becker, Williamson and Keisha Williams hit RBI singles.
Grace Jovanovic and Ellis scored on a throwing error, and courtesy runner Jaycie Dickson came home on Katie Ramsay's sacrifice fly in the fourth.
"We came out and competed and played hard all game long," Mayben said. "We just kept hitting the ball and driving in runs."
