  • PROSPECT — The fourth annual Mill Creek Memorial Veterans Festival gets an early morning start Saturday with a Cougar 10-mile "Fun Run" that includes a 5-mile shortcut for those who may breathe a little heavy in the mountain air.
"We are trying to get folks to recognize and honor vets for what they have done for us," said Fred Wickman, owner of the Prospect Hotel and one of the co-founders of the event. "Over 10 percent of the population of our town are veterans. We want to honor and help them as much as we can."
The Fun Run kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and is followed at 10 a.m. with a parade. Wickman said the parade features local fire department equipment, hot rods, motorcycles, search and rescue units, as well as the Sheriff's Mounted Posse.
The popular bed races will immediately follow the parade. Past competitors have included the Pirates of Prospect, the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs.
"It's a mattress on wheels," Wickman said, "one rider and up to 3 pushers in a drag race down Mill Creek Drive. "¦ This should be interesting."
There's music during the entire event with proceeds from craft and food booths going to support local vets.
At about noon, Wickman, said several U.S. flags that are in poor condition and no longer proper to display or fly will be formally retired.
"It's a very solemn ceremony," he said, "and after that the fun is on for the rest of the day."
