      TIMBERS 94G Red 1,
      HUMBOLDT UNITED 0

RECAP: Goalkeeper Brittney Rice records a shutout and McKenna Barnum and Madison Nahss each net goals in a penalty kick shootout during the Rogue Memorial Challenge U19 girls championship.
  • Brittney Rice and McKenna Barnum could feel the butterflies flittering in their stomachs as they stared into the flames of a tense moment on Monday.
    They, however, remained cool.
Rice, the Rogue Valley Timbers 94G Red team's goalkeeper, orchestrated a shutout during a penalty kick shootout and Barnum netted the victory clinching PK goal as the local squad edged Humboldt Youth Soccer Humboldt United, 1-0, in the Rogue Memorial Challenge U19 girls championship at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Madison Nahss booted in the first PK for 94G Red, which finished 5-0 in the tournament.
The two squads stood scoreless after ninety minutes. Two overtime sessions passed with no resolution. The final act was a shootout.
Enter Rice, who was tasked to perpetuate her shutout under the most nerve-wracking of circumstances.
"Yeah, I had stuff running through my head," said Rice, a Grants Pass senior who has committed to play at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash. "I was so stressed out. You don't even know."Up first was Humboldt's Rachel Hess, who had her attempt stopped by Rice. Next was the Timbers' Nahss, an Eagle Point senior who smoothly knocked in her try.
Delaney Rice's ensuing attempt was blocked by Rice.
After two straight misses by both teams, Barnum stepped forward, squinted intensely at the goal mouth and unleashed her try. The St. Mary's senior's deceptively placed shot sailed into the net and sealed the triumph.
    No sweat, right?
"I mean, I wasn't really stoked to shoot it because in practices I am not very good at them," Barnum said. "But I went up there and I wanted to finish out my senior season well, so I just found the corner and I don't really know what happened after that. I just saw it go in. That's all that mattered."
United, which had a goal wiped away on a hand-ball call in the first half, lost 1-0 to the same Timbers squad during opening-day action on Saturday.
"Their physicality is great, their coaching is great," Humboldt head coach Patrick Stranahan said. "They have a great understanding of the game and they move the ball. They are just a really tenacious squad, as are we, so we matched up very well. We had our opportunities. A crossbar here, a crossbar there. We just didn't get it. That's just the way this game works out sometimes."
The win capped a busy weekend for 94G Red head coach Kevin Primerano, who was also the tournament director.
"It feels incredible," Primerano said. "The older girls in this group won it three years ago, the younger girls in the group lost in the finals last year. And together they pulled together and brought home a title and it just feels outstanding. I am so proud of the girls."
