Police charge California man with assaulting his girlfriend

TALENT — A California arsonist on parole landed in the Jackson County Jail after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend multiple times over the weekend, holding her against her will and threatening to kill her and her 16-month-old grandchild, Talent police said.

Jail records show Ray Howard Ford, 40, was being held in the jail without bail on a warrant out of California charging that he violated his parole. Additional charges include felony fourth-degree assault, menacing, coercion, harassment, child neglect, child endangerment and interfering with a 911 call.

Ford had been living in the Talent RV Park, 405 W. Valley View Road, Talent, for several weeks. Talent and Phoenix police, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to a reported domestic assault in the park at 8:20 a.m. Sunday, May 26.

Ford's 37-year-old girlfriend reported he had assaulted her numerous times throughout the night while preventing her from leaving. She said he also broke her cellphone and threatened to kill her and the child, whom she was babysitting. At one point, he went to another room, and she ran from the trailer.

"She took that as an opportunity to flee," Talent Police Chief Mike Moran said.

Police responded in force to the trailer and tried to get Ford to come out. They entered through an unlocked door and found Ford had fled. The child was still inside, unhurt.

A Sheriff's Department dog and police searched the Bear Creek Greenway, but later returned to the park when a neighbor reported seeing Ford re-enter his trailer. Talent police arrested him there.

The woman was taken to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where her injuries were treated and she was released. Moran said her injuries were substantial.
