A number of area mentors were honored at the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year Banquet Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
Coach-of-the-year awards for their respective sports went to Mike Mayben, North Medford softball; Jeff Nelson, North Valley baseball; John Bruce, Cascade Christian baseball; Joe Volk, St. Mary's track and field; and Ryan Allred, St. Mary's boys golf.
Chris Parnell of Crater was named assistant coach of the year for football and track.
Several coaches were recognized for years of service: Illinois Valley's Loren King (45 years), South Medford's Dennis Murphy (40), Volk (30), Brian Morse (25), Manny Crump (25) and Parnell (25).
Harvey Tonn of Crater received the award for community service.
Girl basketball players Michelle Kinney of Cascade Christian and Jazmine Hancock of Illinois Valley have been selected to play in the East-West All-Star Series June 14-15 at Corban College in Salem.
The seniors will play for the Class 3A East team, which will be coached by St. Mary's Richard Vasey and Nyssa's Danny Pratt.
There will be two games. They are put on by the Oregon High School Girls' Basketball Coaches Association.
The 5-foot-5 Kinney and 5-8 Hancock were all-Southern Cascade Hybrid selections this past season.
