EUGENE — Jordan Stephens pitched a complete-game two-hitter Saturday night to lead Rice to a 1-0 win against host Oregon in the NCAA Eugene regional.
Stephens struck out 11 and walked just two to move the Owls (43-17) within one game of the regional championship.
Oregon (46-15), the No. 8 national seed and the top seed in the regional, must now win three more games to advance and host a super regional.
The Ducks will play San Francisco today in the double-elimination tournament. The winner will play Rice later in the day and the loser is out.
The Owls scored their run in the first inning after Ford Stainback hit a leadoff single to right field and advanced to second on Christian Stringer's sacrifice bunt. Stainback then scored on Shane Hoelscher's double to left-center.
Oregon starter Tommy Thorpe went seven innings, giving up eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
