I'm wondering what the status is on the Northgate shopping center project. Is Phase 2 coming soon?
— Todd M., Medford.
The lead developer in the Northgate Centre Marketplace on the southwest corner of the "Big X" in north Medford is holding its cards close to the vest.
Last summer, a spokesman for Regency Centers, a national retail development company with 345 centers and 17 regional offices, indicated Phase 2 was at hand.
Ryan McNamara, investment manager with Regency Centers Corp., told the Mail Tribune: "We're super happy with Phase 1. If we had the tenants and all the numbers worked out, we would build out right now."
Whether the second part of the project, adding 100,000 to 150,000 square feet to the 80,953-square-foot initial space, is any closer now than a year ago is hard to say. Repeated phone messages and emails to the firm's Portland office went unanswered.
Closer to home, Kelly Aiken at the Medford Planning Department said everything that has been approved has been built, but nothing has been submitted for a second phase.
"They do a lot of work for tenants before they come in," Aiken said. "We haven't seen any applications yet, but I think they were very pleasantly surprised about how the first phase filled up over there."
