Jacksonville man killed in single-car crash

A Jacksonville man died after his car struck a utility pole on Little Applegate Road Thursday evening.

Gary Mumblo, 74, died en route to a local hospital, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported.

Police said a driver called 911 at 5:42 p.m. Thursday to report a green Subaru being driven recklessly. The caller reported that the driver nearly struck another car, so law enforcement officers across the county were advised to keep an eye out for it.

Within minutes, another call came in reporting that the green Subaru had just crashed on Little Applegate Road about a mile-and-a-half beyond its split with Upper Applegate Road, south of Ruch. The car hit a telephone pole, shearing it off and leaving it dangling from the lines above the shoulder of the road, a sheriff's department news release said.

As crews worked to extricate Mumblo from the car, he fought with rescue workers, officials said in a release.

While being transported to Providence Medford Medical Center by a Mercy Flights helicopter, Mumblo died from his injuries, officials said.
