Rogues even their record with 5-1 victory

SILVERDALE, Wash. — The Medford Rogues won their first West Coast League series Monday with a 5-1 victory at Kitsap.

An eight-hit attack, combined with a complete game thrown by Rogues starter Bret DeRooy, moved Medford to 3-3 on the season. The BlueJackets dropped to 2-4.

The Rogues scored two runs in the second inning with the help of one walk by Kitsap starter Ryan Taylor and a single from Brody Weiss. A double by Ryan Teel scored the two runners to make it 2-0.

Kitsap had three hits in the fourth inning — by Daniel Jewett, Alex McKeon and Justin Gheorghe — to make the score 2-1.

In the sixth inning, RBIs by AJ Balta and Caleb Palensky and an error by the catcher put the Rogues in front 5-1.

There would only be two more hits in the game, one by Palensky in the eighth and Teel in the ninth.

Palensky and Teel each went 2-for-4. Teel had two RBIs and Balta and Palensky one each.

DeRooy (1-0) got the win, giving up one run and four hits and striking out seven.

Taylor (0-1) took the loss.

The Rogues visit Victoria for a three-game set beginning at 7:05 tonight.

MEDFORD MUSTANGS 2, KLAMATH FALLS 1 — Austin Zavala produced the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning as Medford rallied to beat the Klamath Falls Senior Babe Ruth squad at Harry & David Field.

Zavala's two-out single to right-center field came after Nate Walker reached first base safely on an error by Klamath Falls' shortstop. Walker advanced to second base on a sacrifice by Isaiah Luzny, and after a strikeout, Zavala delivered.

Cody Hoff earned his first victory on the mound for the Mustangs (2-3), giving up one hit over the final three innings in relief of Hayden Evans, who turned in a quality start.

Evans went six innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits, four walks and fanned nine.

The Mustangs' Taylor Raff tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out single. He finished 2-for-4 with a double.
