  • Doug Kearns, born September 5, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., passed away May 30, 2013, in Coos Bay, Ore. He was 88 years old. He married Beverly von der Mehden June 3, 1945, in Reno, Nev. They had two children: son, Paul Kearns (wife Jill) and daughter, Stacey (partner Mike Skibinski). He has grandchildren, Casey Kearns and Misty Safley Kearns, and Devin, Riley, Cameron, and Blaine Swanson. He also had a sister, Dorothy Bailey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his friend, Ruby Culver; mother, Nell; and father, Thomas.
Doug served in the Army Air Corp, suffering severe injuries and receiving the Purple Heart. Despite his injury, he worked and played long and hard his whole life. Doug worked in the insurance industry all through his career. His hobbies were many, and included horses, photography, charcoal drawings, pencil and acrylic painting, leatherwork, and arc welding. He created many beautiful and unique things that he gave freely to friends and family.
Doug moved on from this earth on May 30th. Alzheimer's took his memory, but kept him a kind and gentle friend and father. He was happy and silly, and still a flirt near the end. He brought smiles to staff and family, and would do anything for his favorite cookies. We enjoyed him in life, and while we're glad his pain is over, we miss him so.
