Some local tennis players got off to good start at the three-day $5,000 Lithia Toyota Open Championships Friday at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club.
Singles players Nate Schnugg and Jon Endrikat and the doubles team of Wil Cochrane and Matt Pronesti advanced into today's quarterfinal round with victories in the round of 16.
In the men's open singles division, the No. 3-seeded Schnugg, a former Medford resident who now resides in San Francisco, defeated Brent Wheeler of Salem, 6-2, 6-2, and Medford's Endrikat pulled out a three-set victory over Alejandro Garcia Ferrero of Portland, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Cochrane of Ashland and Pronesti of Medford rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 10-2 win against Trevor Dobson and Tim Layman in the men's open doubles round of 16. Dobson was part of a duo that finished as the runners-up one year ago.
Cochrane and Pronesti both lost in the opening round of singles play.
Top-seeded and defending tournament singles champion George Jecminek registered a straight set win over Antoine Bechmann of Portland, 6-4, 6-2.
The tournament continues today and concludes on Sunday with the championship matches.
