Richard Kenneth McClanahan passed away at 4:30 p.m., June 10, 2013. Richard was born July 15, 1934 in Medford, Ore.
Richard was known to most people as Red, a nickname stemming from his childhood red hair.
Richard spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Romulus, U.S.S. Penguin, and the U.S.S. Balao.
While in the Navy, he met Claudia Fudge, who became his wife August 20, 1955. They were married 57 years. They had four children; two daughters, Sharon and Michael, and two sons, Robert and Richard Jr.
After his time in the Navy, Richard returned to the Rogue Valley and bought a home in Phoenix.
For many years Richard owned his own company, McClanahan Backhoe Service. In 1987 he sold the business and went to work for the City of Phoenix public utility department. He retired in 1996.
Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing. After retirement he enjoyed gardening. Many people have admired his beautiful yard.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia; and his son, Richard Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon and Michael; his son, Robert; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sandi Workman, Kay Mulholland, and Ann Haggard; and one brother, Stan (Dale) McClanahan.
Richard was always willing to lend a helping hand. Loved and respected, he will be greatly missed by family and friends.
