  • PORTLAND — Prosecutors have asked a federal judge to delay sentencing for the Somali-American man convicted of plotting to bomb a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland's town square. Mohamed Mohamud, 21, is scheduled to be sentenced June 27, but the prosecutors have asked for a delay of two to three months.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ethan D. Knight and Pamala Holsinger wrote in a motion filed Monday that the government needs more time to prepare its sentencing recommendations.
COQUILLE — A 65-year-old Coos County man has been arraigned on charges he killed his wife and a neighbor couple, and set fire to both houses.
Edward Lawrence Nelson appeared in Coos County Circuit Court in Coquille on Monday on six counts of aggravated murder and three of arson. Judge Richard Barron set bail at $6 million. Nelson did not enter a plea.
The judge appointed an attorney for him, Geoffrey J. Gokey of Redmond, who did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.
Nelson is accused of killing his wife, Kathleen, and his neighbors, Renae and Lola Cottam, both 73.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., says he and Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., will soon introduce a bill that would limit the government's ability to collect data on Americans.
The bill is not finalized yet, but the two senators said in a joint statement they'll aim to curb the mass collection of phone records by the National Security Agency.
The Wyden-Udall bill would require that someone's phone records would not be obtained unless agencies could demonstrate a link to terrorism or espionage.
