Murphy captures match play opener in Eugene

EUGENE — Rogue River's Kevin Murphy took early command during the opening round of match play in men's golf play at the 104th Oregon Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club.

Murphy won the first two holes against Portland's Chris Maletis and built his lead to as much as 4 up before ultimately settling for a 2-up victory on Wednesday. Maletis made things interesting for the incoming Oregon State University golfer by squaring the match by winning hole Nos. 15 and 16 but Murphy regrouped to win the final two holes.

Murphy, the No. 2 seed after stroke-play qualifying, advances to play Tim O'Neal of Vancouver, Wash., at 8:34 a.m. in today's Round of 32. O'Neal was also a 2-up winner to open match play.
