  • Medford Parks and Recreation and Medford Rogue Rotary hope to make immediate and lasting impacts on local kids' lives over the summer months.
Parks Uncorked, an evening of wine tasting, food and silent and live auctions, will benefit Medford parks' Play Everyday Scholarship Fund and the Rotary's local youth programs.
"There are a number of food, wine and auction events in the valley each year," says Joe Brett, president of the Medford Parks and Recreation Foundation. "People enjoy them and find them a great way to socialize and support organizations and causes."
The event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 28, in the U.S. Cellular Community Park Stadium, 300 Lowry Lane, Medford. Tickets cost $25 and may be purchased at Santo Community Center, 701 N. Columbus Ave., online at www.medfordparksfoundation.org, by calling 541-774-2400 or at the gate.
"We're excited to be moving the event this year to the summer and into the outdoors at U.S. Cellular Park," Brett says. "We thought the space would be a natural tie-in for the event as it is the crown jewel of our park system, and we're hoping for a warm, gorgeous night."
Look for select wines from Valley View Winery, RoxyAnn Winery, Pebblestone Cellars, EdenVale Winery, Grizzly Peak Winery, Cricket Hill Winery and others, along with craft brews from Southern Oregon Brewing Co. and Walkabout Brewing Co. Food will be catered by Tim's Backyard Barbecue, Capers, Porters, Harry and David and Rosario's.
Items on the auction block include a week's stay in Mazatlan, Mexico, a Sunriver package, golf packages and box seats to a Seattle Seahawks game. Cris Caldwell will be the auctioneer.
Angela Wood of the Medford Chamber and Buzz Thielemann of RHT Energy Solutions will emcee the event, and Brian Bishop of Radio Medford will spin music.
This year marks the fifth time Parks Uncorked has been offered. The event was first held at the Medford library, then at Santo Community Center.
"Call me a dreamer," Brett says. "I was at the U.S. Cellular Park yesterday, and I could just imagine those wine-tasting tables stretching from end zone to end zone. By partnering with the Rotary, we'll have more power in numbers and personal connections that can help the event grow. If this event takes off like we hope it will, we'll need all that extra space at the park."
Brett says the park foundation's biggest priority is to raise money to provide scholarships to families who can't afford the $75 or $80 a week to send their kids to Youth Day Camps, programs that provide recreational and enrichment activities for ages 4 to 12. The camps start when school gets out and run through the end of August.
"The more Parks Uncorked grows, the more impact we will have on the number of kids we'll be able to help," Brett says.
