Community Center damaged when car crashes into a wall

No one was hurt; classes will continue to be held

SHADY COVE — A portion of the Upper Rogue Community Center will be closed for the foreseeable future after a woman crashed her Volkswagen through a wall Thursday morning.

No one was injured in the crash, which happened at 8:23 a.m., just as classes were opening for the day.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Juliette Van Weeghel, 47, of Trail, was attempting to park her 2007 VW Passat in front of the building when her foot accidently slid off the brake pedal.

The car shot forward and slammed into a front corner of the building, punching a hole through the wall, said Tyler Hulsey, operations manager for the community center.

Weeghel was cited for careless driving. There was no indication she was under the influence of intoxicants, officials said.

The building, at 22465 Highway 62, was initially deemed unsafe and was closed. A contractor has since looked at the damage and advised that only a section be cordoned off, while the rest of the building will be opened to the public, Hulsey said.

"The building was hit pretty hard," Hulsey said. "It opened up a gaping hole in the wall. We are glad no one was hurt."

Weeghel was on her way to join a morning workout class when her car hit the building.

All future classes will be conducted as planned, Hulsey said.

On Thursday, the food-pantry service was moved outside because of the crash, Hulsey said.

"We still wanted to provide service to our clients, so we held it outside," Hulsey said.

The building hosts a variety of events, such as summer camps, cooking and sewing classes and fitness groups.

"We also serve a community meal," Hulsey said.

For now, the center will operate with a boarded-up hole in its front wall until the damage can be repaired.

"It will impact us slightly, but we are going to continue providing our services to the Upper Rogue community," Hulsey said.
