  • Jane I. Mathews, 95, passed peacefully of natural causes Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore. Jane was born April 3, 1918, in Seattle, Wash., to Samuel R. Israel and Gladys Hess Israel. She spent her childhood with her parents and a younger brother, James, living at various times in Washington, Oregon, Texas, Idaho, and California.
    Jane graduated from University of California Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science in business administration and subsequently acquired her teaching certificate credentials. She taught high-school and college business classes in King City and Stockton, Calif.
    After WWII, she worked with the Red Cross in France, and worked for short periods in the Philippines and Japan. Jane returned to California where she was hired by Army Special Services to open and direct the Army Service Club at the Presidio in San Francisco. Jane subsequently worked over 35 years in civil service for the Army including multi-year assignments in the U.S., Germany, France, Vietnam, and Korea. She rose to the post of Director, overseeing all recreational facilities for Army Special Services in Vietnam and Korea.
    Jane retired to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1983, and moved to Medford in 1995. Jane was a vibrant, intelligent woman who drew friends to her with her energy, warm hospitality, caring heart and bright smile. In retirement, Jane travelled to all corners of the world with many of her friends.
    Jane was predeceased by her parents; and brother, James Robert Mathews. She is survived by several cousins and many dear friends. No public service is planned. Donations in Jane's memory should be made to Providence Hospice in Medford, Ore., or to the charity of your choice.
