  • EUGENE — Coming off a big win to begin the second day of the 104th Oregon Amateur Championship, incoming Oregon State golfer Kevin Murphy was eliminated by OSU senior Nicholas Chianello in match play on Thursday at Eugene Country Club.
Chianello needed to rally and make birdie on No. 18 to break the tie to win the match, 2 and 1.
Murphy of Rogue River took the lead on the first hole before Chianello made it all square on the next hole and was in control until the ninth hole, when Murphy tied it and took the lead on hole No. 14. Chianello knotted it up again two holes later before closing it out on No. 18.
Murphy defeated Tim O'Neal in his first match of the day with a big comeback of his own by winning six of the final 11 holes to claim the 3-and-1 victory.
O'Neal was 3-up on the ninth hole but Murphy won three of the next four holes to make it all square. Murphy took his first lead on hole No. 13 and finished strong by winning Nos. 14 and 17.
