  • GRANTS PASS — Jockey Luis Gonzalez notched three victories at the Grants Pass Downs on Sunday.
Gonzalez, who has the second most victories for jockeys on the track this season, picked up his first win atop Low Expectations — a local horse owned by Dan Shepherd and trained by Sally Reed — in the second race. Gonzalez finished strong with wins in the seventh and eighth races at the helm of Vezuvly and Disco D, respectively.
Boss Dancer, Risky Orbit and Disco D all won for the second weekend in a row with jockeys Troy Stillwell, Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa and Gonzalez in Races 5, 6 and 8.
Stillwell's victory with Boss Dancer increased his total to nine, while Gonzalez put his at seven. The newcomer Gutierrez-Sosa is in third with five.
Jose Guerrero grabbed a sentimental victory in the sixth race at the reins of Spool Girl, a horse owned by his son Jose Guerrero Jr. and trained by his brother Emilio Guerrero.
The handle at Grants Pass Downs is $139,072, which is $20,311 more than last year after the second weekend of racing.

MEDFORD ROGUES 5, WALLA WALLA SWEETS 2 — At Walla Walla, Wash., backed by a Kevin Davidson home run, Mac Acker guided the Medford Rogues out of a four-game losing streak with a victory against Walla Walla.
Acker went six innings, allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits and two walks accompanied by 11 strikeouts. He improved his record to 2-1 and his ERA to 2.74.
Walla Walla scored a run in each of the second and fifth innings to cut the Rogues' lead to 3-2, but Davidson's towering solo shot to left field in the sixth inning and Colin Sowers' RBI double in the seventh helped Medford (6-12 WCL) pull away.
Rogues reliever Jeff Hardy struck out three in two innings of no-hit ball in the seventh and eighth, giving way for Brandon Williams to get the the final two outs and earn his first save of the season.

MEDFORD MUSTANGS 3, MID VALLEY ROCKETS 1 — Hayden Evans drove in the go-ahead run for Medford, which needed three sixth-inning runs to rally in a bumpy game for the Mustangs at Harry & David Field.
Eric Carlson kickstarted the rally with a leadoff double to left and later scored on Cody Hoff's single. Taylor Raff drove in Hoff on a single to knot the score 5-all and Evans' single put the Mustangs up for good.
The Mustangs (10-6) committed four errors in the contest, which resulted in four runs for the Rockets — all were unearned runs charged to starter Charlie Walker. Micah Brown spelled Walker in the sixth inning, when he gave up one run but picked up the victory.
Hoff went 2-for-3, scored twice and plated two, Daniel Seus was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI and Austin Zavala finished 2-for-4.

NORTH MEDFORD 3, THURSTON 1 — At Corvallis, Josh Berman stole home and later pitched North Medford out of a jam as the Mavericks finished the Corvallis Summer Slam Tournament with a 3-1 record.
The Mavericks (11-2) were eliminated from championship contention when they lost to Sprague on Saturday.
In the top of the first inning, Berman drove in Brett Pearson with an RBI single and after the Mavericks loaded the bases, he made a rare play by stealing home plate.
With North clinging to a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, Thurston put two on base against starting pitcher Pearson. Berman came in and got all three outs via strikeout en route to earning the save.
Pearson went four-plus innings and allowed one run, four hits and two walks and struck out two. Berman did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out seven in three innings of work.
Pearson and Jordan Ragan both went 2-for-4. Pearson added an RBI single in the sixth inning.
