  • Two Medford residents were arrested Saturday afternoon on charges they allegedly sold fraudulent magazine and book subscriptions along Highway 62 in Shady Cove.
Patrick Dow, 26, and Ashley Chiasson, 27, were arrested at Wells Fargo bank on Crater Lake Highway in Medford after they attempted to cash a check that had a stop-payment notation.
Several witnesses told Jackson County sheriff's deputies that a suspicious woman had been traveling door to door selling magazine and book subscriptions, allegedly claiming the proceeds would go to the children's hospital of the buyer's choice. Several who bought subscriptions said they were given a receipt by the woman.
One victim put a stop-payment notation on her check after the woman left because she worried the encounter could be a scam, said sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Carlson.
Deputies found $4,687 in receipts on the pair. Chiasson said they had been living off the money and had less than $200 left, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.
Those who bought subscriptions are encouraged to notify the Sheriff's Department at 541-774-6800 and to put a stop-payment notation on any checks, Carlson said.
