Scammers are targeting Pacific Power customers, telling them they are on the verge of being disconnected and asking for personal information and money over the phone to prevent the shutoff.
A release from Pacific Power says the scammers tell the victims they must pay immediately, either by calling a special number or by purchasing a pre-paid debit card and calling back with the numbers.
Pacific Power said its representatives don't make such requests. Legitimate representatives from the company will have the customer's account number at ready.
"These scammers are in no way associated with our company and we take very seriously any efforts to defraud our customers, especially using our company's good customer relationships and reputation," said Karen Gilmore, Pacific Power's vice president of customer service.
Similar calls have been reported nationwide.
