Police identify Grants Pass shooting suspect

GRANTS PASS — Police have identified the man who allegedly killed a 5-year-old girl with an assault rifle late Thursday in Grants Pass.

Jon Andrew Meyer, Jr., a 30-year-old transient, is held in the Josephine County Jail on charges of second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a machine gun, police reported in a news release. His bail is set at $50,000, jail officials said. (Correction: See below)

The shooting occurred at 9:05 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of NW C St., No. C.

Grants Pass Department of Public Safety officials allege Meyer fired the gun into the apartment's upper level while on the lower level. The 5-year-girl was found outside the apartment and transported to Three Rivers Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. The condition of another victim, a 44-year-old woman, is not yet known, but police reported she is stable.

The case remains under investigation.
