  • The Medford Mustangs jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two innings en route to a 14-0 victory over the Red Bluff Bulls on the second day of the Batzer Construction Southern Oregon Classic at Harry & David Field on Friday.
    The Mustangs (12-6) face the Las Vegas Aces tonight at 7, while Red Bluff plays the Salem Dodgers at noon and the Fairfield Expos at 3:30 p.m.
    Hayden Evans pitched a four-hitter for the Mustangs in a contest that was cut short by a two-hour limit in the sixth inning. Evans, who was a bit wild in his previous two outings, had better command on the mound on Friday, walking three and striking out nine.
    The Mustangs chased Bulls pitcher Walker Dodero before he managed to get one out in the first inning as he surrendered five runs on just one hit. He also walked three and hit one.
    Micah Brown went 3-for-4, Nate Walker 2-for-2 and David Crofton 2-for-4 for Medford. All three drove in a run. Crofton scored twice.

    SALEM 4, LAS VEGAS 0 — Akilu Yoder had a pair of two-run singles, first in the third and later in the fifth, to account for all the scoring.
    Salem pitcher Sam Tweedt delivered a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
    Las Vegas fell to 1-2 in the tournament.

    FAIRFIELD 4, SALEM 1 — Fairfield pitchers Payton Tyler and Justin Lee combined to hold Salem scoreless from the second inning on in the nine-inning affair.
    Tyler, the starter, surrendered one run on eight hits in five innings before Lee took over in the sixth and limited Salem to three hits the rest of the way.
    Joe Manetti was 3-for-5 with a double to lead Salem, which stranded 13 baserunners to fall to 1-2 in the tournament.
    Fairfield, which scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, is 1-1 in the tourney.

    NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 8, CHICO, CALIF. 7 — At Eugene, North Medford scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to eke out the win in the Best of the West Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
    The game was called after six innings due to a two-hour time limit.
    Jordan Ragan's one-out, bases-loaded grounder glanced off the shortstop's glove for an error, plating Aaron Scott with the winning run. Colton Westfall, who opened the inning with a single, and Ryan Westfall, who walked, scored the other two runs on bases-loaded walks.
    Westfall was 2-for-2 and Brett Pearson 2-for-4 for the Mavericks. Each had an RBI and a run.
    Pearson went the distance, giving up 10 hits, fanning six and walking one. Three runs against him were unearned.
    North Medford, 14-3-1 overall, assured itself a spot in Sunday's championship round. It plays Thurston at 6 p.m. today in its final pool play game. The Mavericks are 3-0-1 in the tourney.

    SOUTH MEDFORD 13-1, GRANTS PASS 7-4 — South Medford exploded for 15 hits, all singles, in the opener before Grants Pass pitcher Cody Ekwall held the Colts in check in the second game as the Area 4 rivals split a doubleheader at South Medford High School.
    In the opener, Brandon Lupton, Jake Perry, Austin White and Nate Brammer had two hits apiece to lead the Colts (13-3, 5-1 Area 4), who had a 6-0 cushion through three innings. White was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored twice, and Perry was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and also scored twice.
    In Game 2, Ekwall limited the Colts to one run on three hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort for the Diggers.
    South Medford's only run came in the third inning, when Jimmy Sporer drove in Ryan Carle with a single.
