  • Mustangs stumble with title game on horizon

  • With their berth in the Southern Oregon Classic title game already clinched, the Medford Mustangs baseball team came out flat in a 7-4 loss to the Las Vegas Aces at Harry & David Field on Saturday.
    The Mustangs (12-7), who are 2-1 in the American Legion baseball tournament, will play the Red Bluff Bulls in the championship contest at 1:30 p.m. today at Harry & David Field.
    The Bulls are 3-1 in the tourney, with their lone loss coming Friday in a 14-0 contest against Medford.
    Las Vegas jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Medford took control in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cody Hoff's two-run single to left field with the bases loaded drove in Isaiah Luzny and Charlie Walker, who led off the inning with hits. Micah Brown then scored on a third baseman error.
    But Medford couldn't generate any more offense in the inning with runners on first and second and no one out. The Aces responded with five runs in the fifth.
    Jared Evans' RBI single plated Joe Zavala in the ninth.
    Taylor Raff, Luzny and Evans all had two hits for the Mustangs, who will take on the Salem Withnell Dodgers at 10 a.m. before playing in the title game.
    Cole Crosby and Robert Lee each finished 3-for-4 for Las Vegas.

    RED BLUFF 6, SALEM WITHNELL 5 — Red Bluff's Walker Dodero went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and made the game-ending defensive play.
    Dodero pulled off an unassisted double play from first base with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
    Dakota Albrecht was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Salem Withnell.

    Boone, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, hit his homer with two on and two out in the seventh.

    THURSTON 9, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — At Eugene, Christian Gillis went 2-for-3 and Brett Pearson scored on an error in North Medford's final pool play game at the Best of the West Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
    The Mavericks (14-4-1) had already sewn up the No. 1 seed in their Blue Division and will face the No. 2 seed from the Red Division, either North Eugene or the Oregon Diamond Jaxx, in the championship semifinals at 4:30 p.m. today. Semifinal winners then square off at 7 p.m.
    North Medford finished 3-1-1 in its five-team pool, with Churchill earning the No. 2 seed.

    SOUTH MEDFORD 9-6, NORTH COOS 5-0 — At Coos Bay, Brandon Lupton struck out 11 and allowed three hits in the nightcap to help South Medford complete the nonconference sweep.
    North Coos scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the opener, but the Colts (15-3) answered with a four-run eighth inning to win going away. Justin James supplied a key two-run single to plate Ryan Carle and Caleb Bell, with James scoring on a passed ball and Lupton adding an RBI single.
    Carle finished 3-for-4 in Game 1, with Jimmy Sporer, Jake Perry, Austin White and James each posting two hits.
    In Game 2, Alex Bylund went 2-for-3.
