  • Medford fire crews prevented a second-story deck fire from spreading into the home's interior at 2:30 a.m. today.
Four engines and 14 firefighters from Medford Fire-Rescue responded to a house in the 1000 block of Papago Drive for reports of a structure fire. Crews arrived to find a fire burning on the exterior deck.
Firefighters forced entry and found a single male occupant asleep. He left the home safely, and no one was hurt.
Fire crews had the blaze knocked down within three minutes, preventing it from spreading to the inside of the house, but resulting in damage to the deck and side of the home.
"We were able to put that out fairly quickly," said Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Ken Goodson.
The cause is still under investigation, with lights on the ground floor being suspected as the start point.
"It was looking like the origin was right there," Goodson said.
