  • Medford beats first-place Bend, takes series

  • After struggling at the plate Saturday night, the Medford Rogues tallied 12 hits and scored five second-inning runs to defeat the Bend Elks 8-4 in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday at Harry & David Field.

  • After struggling at the plate Saturday night, the Medford Rogues tallied 12 hits and scored five second-inning runs to defeat the Bend Elks 8-4 in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday at Harry & David Field.
    The Rogues pitched six straight scoreless innings after Bend (19-11) scored two runs in both the second and third innings.
    Medford secured the series win over the first-place team in the West Coast League's South Division with the triumph.
    The Rogues' success at the plate continued after the second-inning outburst. Medford scored one run in the third and two runs in the fourth.
    Rogues catcher Niko Pacheco went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI triple in the second inning. Rogues first baseman Caleb Palensky scored three runs and was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
    Rogues starting pitcher Bret DeRooy pitched 31/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Reliever Dillon Keene finished the game for Medford by allowing only four hits in 52/3 innings with two strikeouts.
    The Rogues (11-14) are 6-2 in their last eight games.
    Medford travels to Klamath Falls today and Tuesday before heading to Bend and Wenatchee for six more road games.

    MEDFORD 7, SAN MATEO 6 — At Reno, Nev., Micah Brown completed a late rally with a go-ahead base hit during the Mustangs' three-run sixth inning to take third place in the Reno Fourth of July Tournament.
    Medford (18-10) finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.
    The Mustangs trailed San Mateo by two runs in the sixth inning before their bats came alive.
    The frame began with a Jared Evans walk, and after one out Taylor Raff singled and Austin Zavala cut the margin to 6-5 with a single of his own. Chris Walker followed with an RBI single that scored Raff, tying the score at 6-all. With two outs, Brown stepped up and singled home Walker.
    Carter Glick stepped to the mound in the seventh inning and retired the side in order, striking out the first and final batters.
    Eric Carlson drove in three runs on a 2-for-2, two-double effort for the Mustangs, who compiled 88 hits in the tournament. Brown finished 3-for-4 and both Walker and Zavala went 2-for-4.

    CENTRAL POINT 9-16, GRANTS PASS 6-6 — At Grants Pass, the Central Point Comets swept Grants Pass in an Area 4 doubleheader.
    In Game 1, Taylor Tibbets finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored, Tanner Ryerson 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Tyler Aplin 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Comets (19-4, 9-1 Area 4).
    In Game 2, Ty Fox was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs, Tibbets 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Aplin 2-for-3 with three runs. Grants Pass' Easton Bents hit a solo shot and an inside-the-park home run in the nightcap.
