  • GRANTS PASS — Trainer Scott Raley hit it big in one of the season's most prestigious races while Luis Gonzalez was crowned as the year's top jockey as horse racing season winded down at Grants Pass Downs on Sunday.

  • GRANTS PASS — Trainer Scott Raley hit it big in one of the season's most prestigious races while Luis Gonzalez was crowned as the year's top jockey as horse racing season winded down at Grants Pass Downs on Sunday.
    Raley claimed his fourth triumph of the season in the fifth race of the day, the Quarter Horse Derby with Sneaking Bye and jockey Jose Guerrero.
    As a 2-year-old last year, Sneaking Bye was runner-up in the Firecracker Futurity. Its owner, Gary Chumbley, was the top owner of the season with four victories.
    Gonzalez won the second, third and eighth races to bring his victory total to 20. He won with Cascadian Storey, Wicked Winnings and Diamonds Suzie Q, respectively.
    Old Standard, which won last weekend, got a victory with jockey Brittany Smith and for owner and trainer Nancy Klapatch of Grants Pass in the 11/16-mile Oregon H.B.P.A. Au Revoir Stakes to collect a $3,600 purse.
    First-year standout jockey Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa won two more races and finished as the season's second leading jockey with 16 total wins. He won the first race with Lady Frangelica and the fourth event with Just a Smarty Girl.
    The season's fourth-leading jockey Jose Guerrero picked up his seventh and eighth victories back-to-back in the fifth race with Sneakin Bye and Trip the Wire in the sixth race.
    Jockey Troy Stillwell had the third most wins with 12 and Tag Skaggs was fifth with seven. The season's leading trainer was Don Young with six wins.
    For the year, GPD brought in 21,460 spectators. The handle was $302,059 in 72 races compared to $293,697 in 86 last season.
