  • CORVALLIS — Former Oregon State pitcher Matt Boyd has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Boyd, a left-hander, was drafted in the sixth round by the Blue Jays back in June. He is from Mercer Island, Wash., and is the son of 1975 Medford High graduate Kurt Boyd.
"So grateful for the opportunity to play professional baseball! Thank you to the @BlueJays for believing in me!," Matt Boyd said on his Twitter account.
    Boyd was a third-team All-American this season and was a freshman All-American in 2010.
He went 22-5 with a 2.13 ERA with eight saves in his career that saw him make 101 appearances. He finished with 216 strikeouts in 258 1/3 innings.
Boyd is the fifth Beaver to sign after being drafted this season.
First baseman Danny Hayes signed with Chicago White Sox and shortstop Tyler Smith with the Seattle Mariners after wrapping up their eligibility.
Smith was drafted in the eighth round and Hayes in the 13th round.
The Beavers have also lost two players who could have returned to the team.
Pitcher Dan Child, drafted in the 18th round, signed with Philadelphia. Catcher Jake Rodriguez, drafted in the 19th round by the Houston Astros, also signed.
