  • BEND — The Medford Rogues ran up an early seven-run lead then survived a late charge from the Bend Elks in a 7-5 win on Wednesday.
It was the first of a three-games series.
A 14-hit attack, charged by a 4-for-5 night by Parker Miles, carried the night for Medford. A strong start by pitcher Chad Hockin also helped tremendously.
Joe Chavez led off the first inning with a single and moved to third on a fielder's choice and stolen base. He scored on a single from Kevin Davidson. Matt Taylor and A.J. Balta followed with singles to load the bases. Miles then knocked two in with a single to take the lead up to 3-0. An ensuing bouncer up the middle from Niko Pacheco plated Balta.
The Rogues (12-16) had six hits in the first inning.
Medford added three more hits and a run in the third as Miles drove in Davidson on a one-out single, moving the score to 5-0. Davidson drove in Chavez in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to give the Rogues a 6-0 advantage. Another run scored for the Rogues in the fifth before Bend (19-12) answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2 through five.
Hockin, in his first start of the season, went six innings and gave up two runs on two hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Relievers Dillon Keene, Brandon Snyder, Hector Lujan and Jeff Hardy finished off the game, allowing three runs in a rough eighth inning. Hardy picked up his first save of the year in retiring the side in the ninth.
Clay Gartner took the loss for Bend, his first of the year after starting 4-0.
Three Rogues — Davidson, Balta and Miles — had at least three hits, with Miles leading the way with his 4-for-5, three-RBI night.
