  • The North Medford Mavericks American Legion A baseball team needed extra innings to derail the Grants Pass Miners in Game 1 of their Area 4 doubleheader on Thursday.
    Colton Westfall came through for the Mavericks in the bottom of the eighth inning by singling home Dakota Adams to pick up a 2-1 victory in the opener at North Medford High.
    The Mavericks (31-11-1, 10-3 Area 4) used late offense to rally past the Miners in Game 2 for a 5-4 win.
    Westfall's single was the third-straight for North Medford after Adams reached with a single, followed by Adams.
    Mavericks pitcher Josh Berman allowed one run on three hits, three walks and struck out seven to snare his sixth victory on the mound.
    In Game 2, Christian Gillis drove in the go-ahead run after Grayson Wolff knotted the score at 4-all with an RBI single.
    Ragan, who also got the win on the mound, went 2-for-3 and scored twice as did Wolff. Wolff also drove in two runs and Gillis was 2-for-3.

    ASHLAND 8-11, PHOENIX 0-1 — At Ashland, a pair of incoming freshmen stymied the Phoenix offense as the Pilots picked up an Area 4 sweep at North Mountain Park.
    Nick Sanderson, a left-hander, pitched a seven-inning shutout on four hits, one walk and six strikeouts in the opener.
    He was aided by Vince Cammarota's 3-for-3 performance. He also scored twice and drove in a run. Matt Flynn plated three runs and added a pair of hits.
    In Game 2, right-hander Jesse Carroll allowed one run on three hits, three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.
    The Pilots broke out for six runs in the fourth inning and the game lasted just six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
    Both Sanderson and Noah Falkner went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

    Junior State Tournament
    SOUTH MEDFORD 7, CRESCENT VALLEY 0 — At Canby, the South Medford Broncos opened play at the Junior State Tournament with a win.
    The double-elimination tournament concludes Sunday.
    Caleb Bell started and went five innings, giving up two hits for the Broncos.
    Michael Jennings went 3-for-3 with two runs to lead South Medford, while Will Smith and Alex Bylund each added two hits.
    The Broncos take on Reynolds today at 5 p.m.
