  • Rogues keep up winning ways

  • The Medford Rogues defeated the Klamath Falls Gems 8-2 Sunday at Harry & David Field, completing their second consecutive series sweep and extending their winning streak to six games. At the same time the Rogues set a new West Coast League record for wins by an expansion team with 20, breaking the record set by Klamath Falls in 2011.

  • The Medford Rogues defeated the Klamath Falls Gems 8-2 Sunday at Harry & David Field, completing their second consecutive series sweep and extending their winning streak to six games. At the same time the Rogues set a new West Coast League record for wins by an expansion team with 20, breaking the record set by Klamath Falls in 2011.
    Medford jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the second inning off a pair of RBI singles by infielder Joe Chavez and outfielder Spencer Smith.
    The Gems tied the game 2-all in the fourth inning but the Rogues regained control in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Chavez.
    Rogues starter Mason Stidham pitched four innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Relief pitcher John Forsythe (3-0) earned the win after allowing only one hit through two innings.
    Chavez led the Rogues at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored while raising his batting average to .305. Smith went 2-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored while outfielder A.J. Balta finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
    With the sixth consecutive win, the Rogues improve to 20-19 overall and move to third place in the West Coast League's South Division.
    The Rogues will take a couple days off for the 2013 All-Star game in Victoria before heading to Corvallis for a crucial three-game series on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.

    MEDFORD MUSTANGS 5-5, ROSEBURG DR. STEWART'S 0-6 — At Roseburg, Isaiah Luzny was lights out for Medford in the opener, helping the Mustangs grab a 5-0 victory, but Roseburg Dr. Stewart's rebounded with a 6-5 victory in 11 innings as the teams split the Area 4 doubleheader.
    Luzny, who pitched his third straight complete game, finished with a shutout. He allowed just four hits, one walk and struck out four.
    Charlie Walker helped out with a 4-for-4, two-double, two-run performance for the Mustangs (26-16, 5-5 Area 4). He also scored a run. Cody Hoff had a pair of doubles, drove in a run and scored once while David Crofton and Taylor Raff were both 2-for-3 hitters. Crofton added a pair of RBIs.
    In the nightcap, the Mustangs held a 5-1 lead in the seventh, but Dr. Stewart's capitalized on a pair of Mustang errors to trim the margin to 5-3 before Roseburg's Noah Miller finished the comeback with a two-run home run to left field to square the score at 5-all.
    In the bottom of the 11th, Cody Grauf plated Cody Matthews with a one-out single to second base to give Dr. Stewart's the victory.
    The Mustangs' Micah Brown pitched well in relief, but was pinned with the loss. He went 3-for-5, drove in a run and scored once.

    Junior State Tournament
    SOUTH MEDFORD 9, CRATER 8 — At Canby, Cole Carder's RBI single to right field drove in the winning run in the ninth inning and secured third place for South Medford.
    Will Smith, who was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, had the game-tying single with two outs in the ninth. He came home on Carder's hit.
    Christian Mahoney finished 3-for-4 and Matt DeVries 2-for-4 for South.
    Three South pitchers held Crater to two hits.

    SPRAGUE 5, MEDFORD NATIONAL 2 — Medford National came up short in its first round-robin contest at Thomas Whittle Fields.
    Skyler Radasa and Zach Taylor each drove in runs for Medford National, which plays Lake Oswego at 6 p.m. today.
