  • After a successful run in the Northwest, Chad and Rachel Hamar are taking their country project, Cloverdayle, to its rightful place.
The Portland-based, husband-and-wife duo will move to Nashville in September.
"We visit Nashville three or four times a year, and we've done that for the past four or five years," Rachel says. "It's definitely home away from home for us."
Southern Oregonians will have two more chances to hear Cloverdayle before it heads east. The duo will play from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Del Rio Vineyards & Winery, 52 N. River Road, Gold Hill, and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at 2Hawk Winery, 2335 N. Phoenix Road, Medford.
The couple, who celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary July 3, have been playing music together since they met in a jazz program at Clackamas Community College 16 years ago. Shortly after they married, they moved into a townhouse down the street from a Starbucks. At 6 a.m. — the coffee shop's busy hour — on Fridays, the newlyweds would play for tips, testing out new songs on groggy audiences.
"By the time we launched Cloverdayle (in 2008), we had a really good sense for what our brand was ... and who we were as musicians and songwriters," Rachel says.
Cloverdayle got off to a good start and, for its second show, opened for Kenny Chesney at the Sleep Country Amphitheater in Ridgefield, Wash.
Since its inception, Cloverdayle has released two EPs — "Just Like This," recorded in Portland, and "Young and Reckless," recorded in Nashville — as well as one full-length album, "9 Miles Down a 10-Mile Road," with songs recorded in both cities.
The latter album, released last summer, was completely funded — all $30,000 — by fans through Kickstarter and two fundraising concerts. The names of all 300-plus contributors are listed in the album's liner notes.
Country star Jason Aldean's band is featured on two of the songs. One song was recorded with Portland session musicians, and the other 11 songs were recorded with "phenomenal" Nashville session musicians, the same used by Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks, Chad says.
The album features traditional and rockin' country songs, written by Chad and Rachel, with elements of rock, blues and soul.
"It's quite a mix but it all works well together," Rachel says.
The lyrics are based on stories from their own lives, their friends' lives and the lives of people they happen to be eavesdropping on, Rachel jokes.
Sometimes, Cloverdayle plays with a band, but even when it's a duo, the show isn't what you'd expect from a guitarist and vocalist.
"We play high-energy acoustic shows," Rachel says. "We don't sit down on stools and do that singer-songwriter thing."
"We like to get the crowd involved," Chad says. "We do whatever it takes to get their attention."
"A one-sided show isn't much fun," Rachel cuts in.
Cloverdayle will play originals along with some covers — not Top 40 country, although they like that — including songs such as "Strawberry Wine" by Dena Carter, "Me & Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin and "Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp.
Tickets to the show at Del Rio cost $10 and include a wine flight from Rock Point Wines. Call 541-855-2062 or see www.delriovineyards.com. The cover to the show at 2Hawk has not been determined.
