Rogues stay in playoff hunt

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Needing a win to stay in the West Coast League playoff race, the Medford Rogues overcame a nine-hour bus ride to beat the Bellingham Bells 6-4 in 10 innings Tuesday at Joe Martin Field.

The Rogues struck first with two in the top of the opening frame, with RBIs coming from West Coast League MVP candidate Kevin Davidson and Parker Miles. Davidson, who leads the league in batting average and RBIs, drove in Spencer Smith and Miles brought home Ryan Degner.

In the third, Smith drove in A.J. Balta to give the Rogues a 3-2 lead. The score held until the bottom of the fifth, when Bellingham tied the game at three.

The Bells pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead that held until the top of the ninth. Rogues second baseman Joe Chavez led the inning off with his first home run of the season and Balta was hit by a pitch before Bells starter Jason Hager was pulled in favor of Aaron Sandefur, who got the Bells out of the inning.

In the tenth Davidson was hit by a pitch with one out and Sandefur walked Jerad Casper and Miles to load the bases with one out. After striking out Chavez, Sandefur hit Balta with a pitch to force in Davidson with the fifth Medford run. A walk to Colin Sowers forced in Casper to make it 6-4 before Sandefur was removed.

Rogues starter Chad Hockin went 41/3 innings, giving up eight hits and three Bellingham runs. He was relieved by Brandon Williams, who gave up the fourth Bells run during his 22/3 innings of work. Chase Tokunaga came in to pitch the eighth for the Rogues and went three innings to finish the game and earn his second win of the season.

With the win and a Bend Elks loss the Rogues are now 31/2 games out of the second WCL South playoff spot.
