Rogues win fifth straight WCL game

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Medford Rogues beat the Bellingham Bells, 3-2, for their fifth straight victory in West Coast League baseball action at Joe Martin Field on Wednesday.

Medford (25-22) remains 31/2 games out of a playoff berth and 41/2 games out of first place in the WCL South with seven league games to play. Three more wins would give Medford the first winning season for any expansion team in WCL history.

Following a Bells run in the first inning, Medford answered with two in the third. After singles by Danny McNabb and Spencer Smith and a walk to Parker Miles, Bellingham pitcher Nick Baker threw an attempted pickoff down the right-field line that allowed McNabb and Smith to score and give the Rogues a 2-1 lead.

In the seventh the Bells tied the game at 2 as reliever Jeff Hardy — who came in for starter John Forsythe — gave up a run before being taken out for Brandon Williams.

In the top of the eighth, one-out singles by Smith and Miles put runners at the corners. Smith then scored on a double steal as Bellingham catcher Jake Bailey bobbled a throw home, giving Medford its 3-2 lead.

Williams (4-3) then shut the door in the eighth and ninth to seal the win. Baker (1-2) took the loss for Bellingham.

Forsythe gave up seven hits and four walks in six innings.

The two teams finish their three-game series at 1:05 p.m. today before the Rogues head for Cowlitz to take on the Black Bears in a three-game series in Longview, Wash.
