  • My inner know-it-all wants Trib readers to know that the nearest true timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) would be in Texas. It is an Eastern species.
The only rattlesnake species in Oregon is the Western rattlesnake, Crotalus viridis. The Applegate teen was bitten by the C.v. oreganus subspecies known as the Northern Pacific rattlesnake. The only other subspecies in Oregon, C.v. lutosis, the Great Basin rattlesnake, lives in far southeastern Oregon. — Bill Powell, Talent
Rogue Valley Medical Center was looted viciously when the Wall Street crisis hit in 2008, collapsing the auction-rate securities market. The interest rates on its swaps went from 5 percent to 18 percent, and it had to pay a reputed $30 million termination fee to end the swaps — which it did at the expense of hospital staff and other cutbacks hurting the population.
Under Glass-Steagall, such exotic "swap" bets could never have happened. Repealed in 1999, the 1933 law prohibited banks from selling securities. Numerous U.S. hospitals and cities have been swindled in a similar way, making the re-enactment of Glass-Steagall urgent. There are currently three bills in the House and Senate to reinstate Glass-Steagall. Congress needs to act now!
FDIC insurance was intended to protect bank savings, and checking accounts; not Wall Street speculators. Congressman Walden, you voted to repeal Glass-Steagall in 1999, and then voted to bail out the banksters in 2008, and through 2010 received $732,400 in contributions from Wall Street. What motivated Trayvon Martin to slug Zimmerman in the face, breaking his nose, then pounding Zimmerman's head on the cement sidewalk and did not quit the pounding when his victim was crying for help and did not stop the pounding until Zimmerman shot him in self-defense?
The prosecution's star witness, Rachel Jeantel, gave insight to Trayvon Martin's mindset before the fight. She said that Trayvon described Zimmerman as a pedophile who usually preys on children, both boys and girls.
Maybe something happened in Trayvon's past that created a deep-seated hatred toward such a pervert, causing Martin to strike out in anger and continued his hate-driven angry assault until Zimmerman ended his misplaced anger.
The case was never about race. There is zero evidence race was involved in the shooting. Yet, President Barack Obama said "Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago."
Maybe President Obama has a reason to be homophobic as was Trayvon Martin, according to the testimony of Rachel Jeantel who was talking with Trayvon right before he broke Zimmerman's nose.
Autopsy toxicology: marijuana and another drug were present.
Even though the fight was never about race, our president did play the race card. — Bill Hartley, Medford
