Members of Hamfist play for beer, steak and pie or any good cause, according to multi-instrumentalist EZ. The seven-piece, acoustic string band puts a cowboy or bluegrass twist on songs from the Americana songbook, including ones by Hank Williams, Lionel Richie, Madonna and Commander Cody.
"We like to say that we take pretty songs and make them 'purdy'," EZ says. "We sort of hamfist them up."
Each member of the Ashland band has worked for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and adopted a stage name. There's EZ on harmonica and ukulele, The Kid on Dobro, Cletus T. Cornhauler on mandolin, Slim on bass, Jonny on guitar, Sequoia on guitar and Bootsy on accordion.
Formed in 2006, the band released its self-titled debut in 2012 and plans to make a Christmas album in the near future.
Hamfist will play at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant, 35 N. Main St., Ashland. The cover is $5. Call 541-482-8818.
