The Medford Rogues tonight became the first expansion team in West Coast League history to reach the playoffs in their inaugural year as the team sweated out a Bend loss to clinch the second WCL South playoff spot.
Bend and Medford finished the regular season tied at 30-24. The Rogues held the first tiebreaker with a 4-2 season series record over the Elks. The playoff spot was in doubt until the very last pitch in Bend on Sunday as the Elks lost, 14-12, to the Walla Walla Sweets, the WCL North Champion. Bend fought back from a 10-1 deficit but couldn't finish off the Sweets in the end.
Medford finished its WCL season on Thursday night and had to watch as Bend dropped all three games of its season-ending series to Walla Walla.
The WCL South Divisional playoffs start at Harry & David Field on Tuesday as the Rogues host the WCL South Champion Corvallis Knights in Game 1 of a best-of-three Divisional playoff series.
The Knights finished the regular season with a league-best 37-17 record.
Tuesday's Game 1 starts at 6:35 p.m. at Harry & David Field. Games 2 and (if needed) Game 3 will be at Goss Stadium in Corvallis on Wednesday and Thursday at 6:40 p.m.
