Matthew Schoening uses live looping and improvisation to fill out his sound.

One man and a little technology create a big sound.

San Francisco-based Matthew Schoening creates improvisational music that features electric cello played over live loops of bass, percussion and ambient sounds achieved through bowing, strumming and percussive techniques. His process builds until it sounds like a full band.

He plays at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Advance tickets cost $15 at or $20 at the door.
