Police name Trail woman killed in construction zone crash

Oregon State Police provided this photograph of the sideswiped truck and trailer that fell onto a woman working at the side of the road.

Oregon State Police have released the name of the Trail woman killed while working on Interstate 5 near Wolf Creek on Wednesday afternoon.

Kathleen Roberta Wilson, 60, was struck and killed by a trailer carrying a lighted arrow sign that toppled onto her after it was hit by a passing semi.

The commercial truck was driven by Jose Guadalupe Botello Sr., 58, of Salem, for Tree Line Transportation Inc., of Turner, police said.

Wilson, who worked for Knife River Corp., stopped a pickup pulling the sign-carrying trailer on the right shoulder with overhead caution lights and emergency flashers activated, police said. She was picking up a portable sign from the grass next to the guardrail near I-5's milepost 76 outside Wolf Creek just after 1 p.m.

Botello was driving a 1994 Freightliner truck pulling a semitrailer north. His truck sideswiped the parked Knife River vehicle, tipping its sign trailer over the guardrail and onto Wilson, police said.

Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency workers, police said.

Unaware that anyone was harmed in the collision, Botello continued north about half a mile to the next exit, where he pulled off the freeway, stopped at a fueling station and walked back to the crash scene, OSP reported. He has cooperated with the investigation, police said.

No enforcement decision was expected until the investigation is completed and reviewed by the Josephine County District Attorney's Office.
