A wildfire burning near Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County briefly closed the freeway to all traffic just south of the Oregon-California border, officials said.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's website reports that a 35 acre wildfire dubbed the Cottonwood fire is burning about two miles north of Hornbrook. The fire was reported along Cottonwood Creek Road at about 2:40 p.m., but firefighters are making good progress, the website says.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that the freeway was closed for a short time to both northbound and southbound near the agriculture checkpoint about five miles into California.

The California Highway Patrol reopened the freeway about 4:30 p.m., officials said.

Motorists are reminded to drive carefully in the area where fire crews are working.
