Barbara Louise (TerKeurst) Barnes, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully August 15, 2013, at her home in Medford after a long battle with breast cancer.

Born November 24, 1949, in Santa Ana, Calif., to Melvin and Louise TerKeurst, Barb grew up in Marietta, Georgia. Barb was the eldest of five daughters and throughout her life valued time spent with her family. Barb, or Bam as she was known by many who knew and loved her, moved to Oregon in 2000 with her devoted husband, David Barnes. David and Barb were kindred spirits and partners in all things. They were the founders and proprietors of Barnes Plumbing, Inc., until their retirement earlier this year. Barb was a talented taskmaster and efficient business woman. She kept the wrenches turning and business running through fat and lean times, and anyone who knew her would remember her abundant energy and no-nonsense approach to getting things done. Barb was also a very talented cooka delicious dessert or home-cooked meal from Barb was something you wouldn't soon forget. She made a special sweet tea that was simply perfect. Though it's an apparently uncomplicated recipe, her tea seems stubbornly difficult to replicate.

Barb was known for her great sense of humor, adventurousness, light-heartedness and fierce spirit. Barb was both kind and tough, and as resilient as they come. Barb also loved to explore. She loved the outdoors, fishing and camping, and loved trekking across the countryside with David, just to see what they could see. She was as happy on the back of a motorcycle or on an ATV as she was sitting in her porch swing, sipping that sweet tea. Though she enjoyed quiet times at home, Barb knew how to have a good time. She will be remembered for her seemingly boundless energy and good humor, and she will be dearly missed.

Barb was preceded in death by her father, Melvin TerKeurst, and sisters, Margaret Seals and Carol Rudin. She is survived by her mother, Louise TerKeurst; sisters Susan Harris and Mary Huckaby; children, Anna Jacobs, Becca Fricke-Croft, and Bart Fricke; and grandchildren, Matt and Andy Croft.

Barb, we will dearly miss you and we thank you for being a part of our lives. We have faith that you are now at peace with our loving God in Heaven, and we look forward to seeing you again in the life of the world to come.

A memorial Mass for Barb will be held in the Log Chapel at the University of Notre Dame at 5:00 p.m. September 5, 2013. Barb will be cremated and her ashes spread upon the Castle Crags in northern California that she loved so much. She was adamant that no funeral be held. But, since Barb loved a good party, a small celebration of her life will be held at her home in Medford today, August 17 at 1:00 p.m. (we hope she doesn't mind). RSVP: (541) 890-7899.
