Growling for some good beer

I'm new to the craft beer scene, in particular, the growler craze. I know in California you have to have your growler filled at the store or brewery from which it was purchased. I'm wondering if there are similar rules for Oregon.

Welcome to the wonderful, transportable world of beer growlers, Trevor.

For those not in the know, a growler is a glass jug that carries approximately a half-gallon of beer. Several bars and breweries throughout Southern Oregon are more than happy to fill these growlers with your choice of beer to go.

However, some rules apply, according to Eddie McIntosh, the manager of Growler King, which operates out of the Quality Market, 1211 E. Jackson Street, Medford.

"We'll fill any glass as long as there's a lid on it when you leave," McIntosh said.

Growlers sold without lids violate Oregon's open container laws. The Growler King has lids on hand to solve this problem when it arises.

Oregon is ahead of the game in making growlers user-friendly, McIntosh said.

California's laws carry certain stipulations that make growler-filling more complicated. This is because: A. It's California and B. It's California.

California requires that growlers be filled at the spot where the jug was sold. This means you can't bring a growler you bought at one brewery and have it filled at another one operating just down the street.

Our neighbors to the south are dealing with the problem by allowing bars and breweries to place labels on growlers that sidestep the law. So, a brewery is allowed to affix a sticker onto a growler with its company logo, making it legal to fill it at the location, according to the Los Angeles Times.
