Mahlon Red Opdahl of Medford, Ore., passed away peacefully at his home Friday, August 23, 2013, at the age of 93.
Red was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. in October of 1919. He celebrated his 73rd year of marriage to Hazel Akkerman five days before his passing. After being a dairy farmer in their early married years, he moved his wife and six children to Southern California where he became a carpenter. They moved to Medford, Ore. in 1967, where Red retired from construction in 1980. He loved to read, hunt, fish and camp, and instilled his joy of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. He was the king of the one-liner and maintained a positive outlook on life to the very end.
Survivors, including his wife, are three sons, Ron, Gary, and Steve and three daughters, Carol, Joyce, and Betty. He had 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A casual graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Hillcrest Mortuary on North Phoenix Road. An open house celebration of life will immediately follow at the family home.
