Rogue River trail reopens

A 40-mile backpacking trail through the Rogue River Canyon has been reopened, another sign fire crews are gaining ground in southwestern Oregon.

The national recreation trail from Grave Creek to Illahe (IL'-uh-hee) had been closed as crews worked the Big Windy fire, but managers said Wednesday that hikers could get back on it.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says that, typically, hiking trips take four to five days. The trail is closed to vehicles, bicycles and pack animals.

Earlier, rafters were allowed back on the stretch of river designated as wild and scenic. The main shuttle route, the Bear Camp Road, remains closed, however.

The Big Windy fire is considered 45 percent contained and has burned in an area of nearly 38 square miles, or about 24,000 acres.
