Asante Physician Partners has opened a new, five-physician clinic in the Medical Arts Building in Medford near Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.
The Family Medicine Clinic at 691 Murphy Road was started to recruit more doctors to Medford so Asante could help fill a growing doctor-gap in the community, said Sheri Bodager, executive director of Asante Physician Partners.
"Many of our local primary care offices are closed to new patients, and many members of our community cannot find a primary care physician," she said.
Beginning in January, the Affordable Care Act will provide coverage for a large number of uninsured people. Bodager said the new physicians will be needed to meet the demand.
The new clinic offers extended hours and the option to walk in without an appointment. It's open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
There will be seven primary care physicians on staff by the end of the year at the clinic, and they plan to continue to grow the service, Bodager said.
Of the seven physicians, six are new to the area. They will all participate in the new coordinated care approach to medicine, in which a heavy emphasis is placed on preventive care.
"We are moving to a new model of care in which we will get to know our patients and reach out to them to make sure they are receiving the right preventive care before they are sick and need more intensive and expensive care," Bodager said.
She said the model is attractive to many physicians and has been a factor in the growth of the new primary care network.
Dr. Marcelin Charles, a six-year primary care veteran, will be joined by six new physicians this year:
The addition of the physicians already has begun to pay off in quick responses for patients. "The practices are set up to allow for same-day appointments and are beginning to grow quite nicely," Bodager said.
