Butte Falls gets new police station

Local donations, grant from Plum Creek Foundation made new quarters a reality

BUTTE FALLS — The Butte Falls Police Department will have a new home toward the end of October thanks to a $5,000 grant for the Community Outreach for Public Safety Project from the Plum Creek Foundation.

Construction began in June, and the project will put the department into a new facility next door to the Butte Falls Volunteer Fire Department, a press release said.

The Plum Creek Foundation is operated by Plum Creek Timber Co. Inc., a lumber and wood products firm based in Seattle that employs 1,200 people in 19 states.

The foundation supports organizations such as the BFPD that improve the quality of life in the communities where the foundation operates and where Plum Creek employees live and work. In 2009, the foundation awarded nearly $1.9 million to communities across the United States, spokeswoman Martha Woodham said.

The 1,200-square-foot Butte Falls building will provide much more room for police officers to work, and will even provide sleeping quarters for officers on call, Butte Falls Police Chief Chris Hanson said.

"The office we are in now is an old, single-wide Medco shop office," Hanson said.

With two paid officers, one part-time reserve coordinator/patrolman and two reserves, the building isn't up to standard, Hanson said.

He said in a news release that the current office is too small, lacks outlets for computers and electronic equipment and does not comply with health and safety codes.

The community is coming together as well to make the relocation a reality for the police department.

"Many of the businesses in town have donated to this project," Hanson said. They donated everything from wood for the new handicapped ramps to leveling the site and cutting the slab for the foundation.

He said other businesses have agreed to donate food for the volunteers when they start helping clean and move office equipment.
