In three games, the South Medford girls soccer team has yet to surrender a goal.
The Panthers defense denied Mountain View the chance to test South goalkeeper McKenzie Kapp, who only needed to make one challenging save to earn her third shutout in goal en route to a 3-0 nonconference victory at South Medford High on Saturday.
Kapp had to make just three saves overall, but the only one that threatened breaking the Panthers' opponent scoreless streak was a high-lofted ball that was collected by Kapp while South boasted a 2-0 lead.
"We had a pretty good handle most of the game and we got the win and that's what we wanted," said Panthers coach Chris Hollewijn. "That's three for (Kapp). She's done her part but the team defense has played a big part."
The Panthers' Franny Gomez scored in the box from 16 yards out on a touch pass from Haylie Durant in the 15th minute.
Montana Logue gave the Panthers (3-0) some breathing room with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute and Sierra Christopher secured the victory with a score on a cross from Erin Riley at the 73-minute mark.
BEND 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — Two Bend corner kicks found the goal in a nonconference victory at Hoffbuhr Field.
Hanna Haines made one of the shots in the 20th minute, and Amidee Colleknon tallied the other in the second half.
North Medford (1-1) responded to the Lava Bears' first goal with its own two minutes later, with Amanda Hisey doing the honors off an assist from Halley Folsom.
The Black Tornado, which had a 35-yard indirect score by Morgan Barry disallowed, outshot Bend 12-7.
THURSTON 5, CRATER 0 — At Central Point, Crater played well in the first half before defending state champion Thurston found the net in the second half for all five of its goals.
The Comets (0-1) limited the Colts to just two shots on goal in a scoreless first half in part to strong defense led by Crater's Jamie Dirksen.
SHELDON 3, ROSEBURG 1 — Roseburg's Kara Krnacik tied the game at 1-all on an assist by Emily Roy but Sheldon scored two unanswered goals to earn the nonleague win.
Jaira Brooks scored on a direct kick for the Irish in the second minute of play and Ashley Osborne's goal in the 51st put Sheldon up for good. The Irish tacked on an insurance goal three minutes later against Roseburg (0-1).
ASHLAND 2, KLAMATH UNION 2 — At Ashland, after Ashland scored two straight goals to take a lead, Klamath Union made a rally of its own with 10 minutes left as the teams tied in a nonconference match at North Mountain Park.
Trailing the Pelicans 1-0 at halftime, the Grizzlies' Jessy Harrower notched a goal in the 43rd minute on a free kick by arcing the ball over the wall and into the upper corner. Seven minutes later, the Grizzlies (0-0-1) took the lead on a goal in the penalty box by Ia Baleuena which was set up by a pass from Sadie Bailey.
The Pelicans tied the score 2-all on a long free kick in the 70th minute.
EAGLE POINT 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Eagle Point, host Eagle Point played stout defense en route to its season-opening win in nonconference action.
Illinois Valley dropped to 1-1.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — Cheyanne Auchard not only delivered both goals for Cascade Christian but helped give the Challengers their first ever victory over Class 4A Hidden Valley at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Auchard scored in the eighth and 57th minutes and the defense did the rest against a Mustangs squad that graduated six players from last season.
Goalkeeper Jessica Weber only needed to grab one save to record the shutout for the Challengers (2-1). Hidden Valley dropped to 0-2.
