New parks still need more work

I noticed the second park in The Commons is taking shape. But I also noticed they've got part of the first park blocked off with a fence. Aren't they done with the first one yet?

Actually, Dale, the work isn't completed. Most people don't realize there is a water feature in the first park along Sixth Street next to Lithia Motors' headquarters because it hasn't been operating.

Also, the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, responding to citizen concerns, wanted a drinking fountain installed in the park.

Lithia Motors, which has been general contractor for the parks project, is picking up the $10,000 tab for the drinking fountain, which wasn't part of the original plans for the first park.

The splash pad ran into difficulties in receiving a permit from Jackson County.

To address the county's concerns, an additional $15,000 may be spent to install more equipment in the splash pad, which will shoot jets of water into the air and will be illuminated with colorful lights at night.

The second park to the north, which is costing $1.5 million to build and is to the south of Fourth Street, will have drinking fountains.

Lithia anticipates the second park, built by KOGAP Enterprises Inc. of Medford, should be done this fall in time for a tree-lighting ceremony to celebrate the holidays.
