Accused rapist could get 20 years in prison

Man, 42, allegedly raped 14-year-old he knew through church and family

A Medford man accused of stalking and raping a 14-year-old Phoenix girl last month faces two Measure 11 rape charges and up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Jackson County sheriff's detectives on Monday arrested Edgar Leonel Perez-Izara, 42, at his home in the first block of Cottage Street, Medford, on multiple charges, including first- and third-degree rape, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and coercion.

Investigators reported that Perez-Izara went to the girl's residence near Phoenix three weeks ago and found her home alone. After making threats to harm her, Perez-Izara sexually assaulted her, a sheriff's department news release said.

Sheriff's detectives said they have evidence that Perez-Izara stalked the girl, whom he knew through family and church contacts, outside her home on several occasions prior to the day of the assault.

"We know he knew her through her church and family," said Lt. Christine Bronson, sheriff's spokesperson.

Perez-Izara appeared before Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Barnack Tuesday afternoon and was arraigned on two charges of first-degree rape. Barnack ordered a public defender to represent Perez-Izara and scheduled a preliminary hearing for him at 4 p.m., Sept. 17.

The judge also ordered Perez-Izara, who investigators suspect of being in the country illegally, be held on $1 million bail. Barnack put a "no contact" order in place with the victim should Perez-Izara manage bail.

Bronson said anyone who may have had contact with and concerns about Perez-Izara, or who may have information about this case, should contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Department at 541-774-8333 or by email at CID@jacksoncounty.org.
